Eden’s turbine plan set for January decision

The Eden Project’s application for a single wind turbine on its site near St Austell is due to be determined by Restormel Borough Council on January 29, 2009. The council’s planners have decided to hold a special committee meeting to vote on the 127-metre turbine. Eden first announced the plan in August and held a two-day exhibition in Trethurgy Village Hall. The project’s findings from that consultation showed that 72 per cent of people who attended supported the proposal, 14 per cent of them “with reservations.” The turbine plan has since been discussed at two meeting of the Eden Neighbours’ Forum and at a public meeting at Eden on October 29, attended by around 250 people and chaired by Laurence Reed of BBC Radio Cornwall. At that meeting Eden chief executive Tim Smit agreed to ask that Restormel postpone a decision by a month so that neighbours would have more time to consider the detail. That request was put in formally to the council and last week the planners decided that the turbine would be the sole topic of discussion at the special meeting on January 29. The turbine would provide a clean electricity supply, generating more than 100 per cent of Eden’s needs across the year, as well as acting as a focus for debate around renewable energy technology and the future of the UK’s energy supplies. In response to concerns about the height, and at the request of neighbours, Eden is arranging to put up a balloon to a height of 127 metres from the point where the turbine would stand. It is planned that the balloon will be put up during a single day at the end of November or beginning of December. The operation would be weather dependant and neighbours will be given as much notice as possible. Eden has also helped arrange for Neighbours' Forum members concerned about the impact of the proposed turbine to visit the site of two turbines near Penryn. A representative has been put in touch with Dean Millar, Senior Lecturer, Renewable Energy and Mining Engineering at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus. The neighbours will be able to visit the Renewable Energy laboratories at the university and experience first-hand the visual impact of the turbines close to the campus.

Open Public Meeting held on October 29
The Eden Project held an open public meeting on Wednesday October 29 to discuss its Clean Energy Project proposal to build a wind turbine on the northern side of its site. The meeting gave neighbours and other interested parties another chance to air their views on the plan, which has been submitted to Restormel Borough Council and is now in the consultation stage. Eden’s proposal is for a single two megawatt turbine, 127 metres in height. Over a year, a turbine of this size would supply Eden with enough clean and secure energy to run its operations and to feed some back into the national grid. Eden announced plans for the turbine in early August and held an open two-day exhibition at Trethurgy Village Hall. One hundred neighbours and 20 councillors shared their views. Findings from the exhibition showed that 72 per cent supported the turbine proposal – 58 per cent outright and 14 per cent “with reservations.” Since then Eden has held two meetings of its Neighbours’ Forum where the turbine has been discussed. The forum is a six-weekly meeting of Eden and its immediate neighbours, nominated to represent the wider community. At the previous meeting, held in August, the forum was extended to allow other neighbours to come and give their views.
